No, not the frozen slushy one, nor from a mix. Great margaritas have a few simple ingredients letting high-quality tequila shine. First task, choose your favorite tequila.
Margarita Recipe Ingredient: Choose from 3 Types of Tequila
Tequila types differ based on the aging process.
- Blanco: the most agave forward. Mostly straight from distilling to bottle or aged in a steel barrel for around 60 days. A crystal clear color.
- Reposado: aged in oak barrels for up to a year producing a smoother more mellow taste with a slightly amber color.
- Anejo: longest aging, 1-3 years in oak barrels. Many times from old whiskey or wine barrels creating sweeter flavors such as vanilla or brown sugar.
My go-to is Reposado, imparting a slightly sweeter and deeper, mellow taste compared to a more biting blanco. Many cocktail recipes specify Blanco, Reposado or Anejo. Experiment, and swap them out creating different-tasting cocktails!
There are lots of origin stories about Margaritas. My favorite is from a 1940s cocktail, the Daisy. Tequila was substituted for vodka or gin – and the name was changed to the Spanish word for Daisy… Margarita!
