Denim Day: Standing Together in Solidarity

Denim Day sounds like a fun way to celebrate the fabric of our lives! But no, think again. The day Is a powerful symbol of protest against the misconceptions and injustices surrounding sexual violence.

The Origins of Denim Day

In the early 1990s, a young woman in Italy was raped by her driving instructor. Originally found guilty, the 1999 Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction based on the “jeans alibi”… her jeans were so tight, her attacker obviously needed her assistance, implying consent.

Wide-spread indignation resulted in protests by the women in the Italian Parliament wearing jeans to work in support of the victim. This act of defiance ignited a global movement, leading to the establishment of Denim Day. It’s observed by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Why Denim Day Matters

Denim Day challenges the stereotypes and victim-blaming attitudes that often surround sexual assault cases. By participating in Denim Day, individuals, organizations, and communities make a collective statement: we believe survivors, we support them, and we stand against the societal barriers that perpetuate sexual violence.

Participate in Denim Day 2024

Participation can take many forms, from wearing jeans to organizing events that raise awareness about sexual violence. Educational workshops, film screenings, and fundraising events for local victim support services can be found in most areas.

It’s not just one day.  We all need to find ways to increase awareness in our own communities, to debunk myths about sexual violence, and empower survivors.
